Cleves Cross Primary School Design Technology Curriculum Intent

Design technology at Cleves Cross is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, the children will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

They will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on the cross curricular links in mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. The children will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.

Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the school as well as in the wider context of home and community.

Through our DT curriculum, the children are given opportunities to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. Through carefully planned lessons, they will begin to build and apply a repertoire of progressive knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users. Through these experiences they will learn to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.

They will also be able to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating, learning how to prepare and cook food. Instilling a love of cooking within the children will also open a door to one of the great expressions of human creativity. In Year 6 the children will look at the career of Chef Shaun Rankin, who was born in Ferryhill and attended our school for a while. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.

We are very proud to be able to share with you that we have, for the 8th time, been awarded an Eco-Schools β€˜Green flag with distinction’. The eco-schools team have given us lovely feedback. They were particularly impressed with our involvement with the tubs2pubs campaign, our litter picking events and how well the whole school got involved with β€˜Earth Day’. They said: β€˜You have shown as a school you are incredibly dedicated and enthusiastic about keeping our planet safe for the next generation. You are all superstars!β€™πŸŒŸπŸŒβ™»οΈ

To our amazing Year 6 class of 2026,

As you leave primary school behind, take a moment to look back on all the memories you have made. From your first days of learning and growing, to the friendships, laughter, challenges and achievements that have shaped you, every moment has helped make you the incredible people you are today.

You have shared countless smiles, supported each other through ups and downs, and created friendships that will stay with you long after you leave these classrooms. The playground games, the funny moments, the lessons learned and the memories made will always be a special part of your journey.

Although it is time to move on to new adventures, remember the friends who walked beside you, the teachers who believed in you, and the wonderful memories you created together. Carry your kindness, courage and confidence with you as you begin the next chapter.

Class of 2026, be proud of how far you have come. Dream big, stay true to yourselves, and never forget the special bond you shared as a Year 6 class.

Good luck for the future β€” you will always be remembered.
