Safeguarding 

KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE 

Cleves Cross Primary and Nursery School is committed to safeguarding. Safeguarding means keeping your child happy, healthy and safe in school. All staff are trained at regular intervals and are aware of how to keep our pupils safe and what signs to look out for.  Our pupils are encouraged to share any concerns and we have robust policies and processes in place that underpin safeguarding. 

We will ensure that: 

• The welfare of the child remains paramount. 

• All children whatever their age, culture, disability, gender, language, racial origin, religious beliefs and/or sexual identity have the right to be protected from harm. 

• All suspicions and allegations of abuse will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately. 

• All staff and volunteers working at our school have a responsibility to report concerns to the Designated Leads for Safeguarding: Mrs Brentnall and Mr Hornsby. 

Areas of Safeguarding 

Our safeguarding policies cover all areas of school life and include: 

• Staff and visitors – ensuring they are vetted, informed and trained. 

• Children’s behaviour – promoting safer and happier behaviours and lifestyles. 

• Parents and carers – promoting links and supporting families. 

• Premises – keeping them safe, pleasant and fit for purpose. 

• Curriculum – providing positive, life affirming learning experiences. 

• Outside School – ensuring safer activities and environments outside school. 

KEY PEOPLE YOU CAN TALK TO IN SCHOOL: 

We are all responsible for ensuring that each child remains safe, however the Designated Safeguarding Lead is: Mrs Brentnall– Head Teacher.  Mr Hornsby and Mrs White are the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead. 

STAFF TRAINING 

Staff are trained in child protection issues and they are aware of the procedures to follow. Staff are encouraged to be vigilant in order to maintain the safety of our children. All Staff and Volunteers are given a copy of the document ‘KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE IN EDUCATION’ 

SAFER RECRUITMENT 

We carefully check that all staff and volunteers are safe to work with our children. A number of checks are made including DBS checks, references, ID and employment history.  We keep a Single Central Record of all this information and this is regularly monitored. 

Visitors and volunteers are rigorously checked in much the same way staff are before they can have any unsupervised access to our children.  Any contractors on site have to read the Safeguarding Information Leaflet before being signed into the building.  All adults in school wear an ID badge.

CHILD PROTECTION 

In cases where the school has reason to be concerned that a child may be subject to ill- treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse, the Designated Safeguarding Lead may report this concern to Social Services and/or other appropriate agencies. 

Please remember that when the school refers a concern about a child to the Social Services Department, it is not accusing the parents of abuse but requesting that further investigation takes place to establish whether a child is at risk.

WHAT WE TEACH 

We offer a secure and encouraging environment where children feel safe and their spiritual, moral and cultural development is enhanced through the delivery of our whole school curriculum, including our Religious Education and PSHE curriculum, work with external agencies, charities and the local community.

INFORMATION SHARING 

We have an obligation to obtain necessary information from parents in advance of a child being admitted to school, including: 

• emergency contact numbers 

• the child’s dietary requirements, preferences or food allergies the child may have 

• the child’s health requirements 

• information about who has legal contact with the child and who has parental responsibility. 

Written parental permission is requested, at the time of the child’s admission to the provision, to the seeking of any necessary emergency medical advice or treatment in the future. 

PARENTS AND CARERS MUST TELL US OF ANY CHANGES TO THESE DETAILS. 

We take confidentiality very seriously. Any information which we hold is treated as confidential and shared on a ‘need-to-know’ basis.

ONLINE SAFETY

Online safety is a vital part of our safeguarding approach. We aim to help children use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly both in and out of school.

What We Teach

• How to recognise and respond to online risks, including harmful content and contact.
• The importance of respectful online behaviour and positive digital relationships.
• How to keep personal information private.
• Where to go for help if something online makes them feel uncomfortable.

Our Approach

• Online safety is embedded across the curriculum, especially in Computing and PSHE.
• We use age-appropriate resources and discussions to build digital resilience.
• Staff receive regular training to stay updated on online risks and how to support pupils.

Support for Parents

• We share guidance and resources to help families keep children safe online at home.
• Parents are encouraged to talk openly with children about their online experiences.
• Our Acceptable Use Policy outlines expectations for safe technology use.
• We share guidance with parent controls and safety settings.

Policies and Monitoring

• We have robust filtering and monitoring systems in place.
• Online safety incidents are handled in line with our safeguarding procedures.
• Our Online Safety Policy is reviewed annually and available on our website.

LINKS WITH EXTERNAL AGENCIES 

Because our first concern must be the well-being of your child, there may be occasions when we have to consult other agencies before we contact you. The procedures we have to follow have been laid down in accordance with the local authority child protection procedures. 

We are fortunate to be supported by a range of external agencies which can be called upon to support the work we do in school. These include: 

• School Nurse,  

• Health Practitioners,  

• Educational Psychology,  

• Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services,  

• Behaviour Support,  

• Social Services  

• Specialists in supporting Special Educational Needs.
